A Concerned Opinion

Here's an article from someone who is as disturbed as I am about TomKat, and more specifically, what it has done to sweet Joey Potter. Where's Pacey to smack some sense into her?

Even Tom's curiously strong sci-fi cult doctrinating skills are no match for the love of Pacey. Or even the real Joshua Jackson for that matter. Save our girl, stat!

July 4th Suggestions

Philly's been dialing in their July 4th fireworks for several years now. Last night's most egregious example was the song "Philadelphia Freedom," which guest icon Elton John had performed on stage not 10 minutes earlier. Sure, "Gonna Fly Now" is awesome, but can't we be original one year Philly? Here are my suggestions for livening up the fireworks display:

  • Ixnay on the "Roud to be an American P"ay. Leave this country in peace for a year, Lee Greenwood. I think we've heard enough out of you.
  • Slip in a Christmas carol, particularly during one of the red and green clusters of glitz.
  • Send up all the fireworks at once, right at the end of Neil Diamond's masterwork "Coming to America." The show would be shorter, and pack a greater punch.
  • Have John Street perform BMX tricks on his trusty bicycle. If that doesn't work, he should rappel down the face of the Art Museum on stilts, wearing a ginormous patriotic jumpsuit with liberty suspenders over said stilts, to open up the show.
  • Change the music to selections from the Trainspotting soundtrack. The fast, trippy stuff only.
  • Nix the fireworks alltogether. Instead, hand sparklers to a team of rhythmic gymnasts dancing to Wham! favorites. Especially that awesome "Freedom" song.
  • Play "Do They Know It's Christmas." Whoops, wrong Philly event.
  • Make Boyz II Men the permanent opening act. Just like they used to be the permanent headliner before being dumped for the Bahamen.
  • More funnel cake!

Variety is the spice of life, Philly! Embrace some change, and we'll all enjoy the annual spectacle that much more. Happy Birthday America!

TomKat Conspiracy

I love how wrong this whole thing is. More fuel for the fire.

An Early Entry In My Annual Emmy Campaign

The OC made me cry and shocked me and left me awaiting the new season with much eagerness. I'm going to trumpet Kelly Rowan as an early favorite for an Emmy nomination. She'll probably be passed over because she's on a show with a target audience that doesn't include old Academy fogies, but that's a crime. Kirsten's descent into alcoholism and depression this season has been handled so well. It's given Rowan a chance to really shine, exploring some dark issues you wouldn't expect on a "teen" show. The intervention last night also gave Adam Brody the chance to try out the drama for a change. And Peter Gallagher, and his eyebrows of course, was his usual excellent self. The whole thing came off very realistically for a show that specializes in flights of fancy.

I also enjoyed the resolution of the Marissa-Trey-Ryan story. The only thing better would have been that Jess character getting shot as well. In fact, that would have been a good idea to get rid of Oliver in Season 1! Trey's willingness to kill his baby brother was truly chilling. I hope they address the legal side without making it a Days of Our Lives style jailhouse drama scene. There's no question whatsoever that it was self-defense, and if Marissa hadn't done it, Ryan would be dead. I can't believe I am writing in support of Marissa Cooper.

I hope this momentum carries them through to a stellar third season.

Finale Exhaustion

I am so happy that the current TV season is coming to a close. I have never felt so simultaneously over and underwhelmed by my shows before. It's like homework to watch some of my favorites, while some shows have been exhiliarating to enjoy.

Veronica Mars has to be my new most beloved little show that could. What a great ride that season was! I encourage everyone to rent this puppy on DVD before the Season 2 finale. Lost has also been a joy to watch.

Alias, which had been stinking up the joint a bit recently, had what I think was the first all out kick-ass episode of the season last night. It's about time! I hope they don't wreck this goodwill in the season finale. The jury is still out on The OC. Here's hoping they wow me tonight.

RIP Rancho Chicken

Somehow, my weekly grilled chicken caesar salad and medium Diet Coke was not enough for the Rancho Chicken at Willow Grove's food court to hold on to profitability. Not only have I lost the finest chicken caesar salad in the Abington-Willow Grove-Jenkintown area, but now I don't have the cashier to try to flirt at me over the selection of salad dressing. What a dark day indeed for the food court.

Thanks for the great salads, Rancho Chicken. And the memories.

CNN Is The New Onion

Sample headlines from cnn.com today:

  • "Jesus Christ in legal battle to get license"
  • "Tony Danza in go-kart close call"
  • "Pizza ends prison hostage standoff"
  • "Oldest living munchkin tells all"
  • "Cannes: Orgy of glitz?"

Awesome.
